Tether With an Android Phone

With Honcho, you can tether your camera with an Android phone, and upload photos from camera to cloud.

Start by connecting the camera to your Android phone with a cable.

You’ll see a dialog to choose an app for the USB device—which refers to your camera.

Tap Honcho.

The mobile app will launch with your camera already connected. You’ll see your camera in the camera toolbar.

You’re ready to go! As you shoot, your photos will be automatically transferred to the mobile app and uploaded to the cloud.

If your camera disconnects during a shoot, check that the cable is securely connected—it can come loose even when it’s still plugged in, causing a disconnection. To prevent this, we recommend locking the cable in place with a tether plate, or mounting your phone to the camera to minimise cable movement.

Troubleshooting

No dialog to choose an app for the USB device

If you connect your camera but don’t see the dialog asking you to choose an app for the USB device, it’s likely because a different app has been set as the default. You’ll need to reset this setting.

To reset app preferences:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications).
  3. Tap See all apps (or Manage apps / App info) to view the full list.
  4. Tap the three-dot menu (usually in the top-right corner).
  5. Select Reset app preferences.
  6. Tap Reset apps to confirm.

Unable to connect to camera

If you selected Honcho as the app for the USB device but the camera still isn’t detected, notifications may be disabled. Honcho requires notifications to connect to your camera.

To enable notifications:

  1. Find the Honcho icon on your home screen or app drawer.
  2. Press and hold the icon until a menu appears.
  3. Tap App info or the ⓘ icon.
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Turn notifications on (usually labeled Show notifications or All Honcho notifications).

Check your notifications

Some Android phones may show a notification when you connect your camera.

Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the notification center, then tap the notification.

You’ll see the dialog to choose an app for the USB device. Tap Honcho.

Enable OTG

Some Android phones require OTG to be enabled before they can connect to your camera.

Open Settings, then look for More connections, Additional settings, Bluetooth & other devices, or a similar option.

Enable OTG.

On some phones, OTG may turn off automatically if your camera is disconnected for more than 5 minutes. If your camera does not reconnect, check that OTG is still enabled, then try connecting again.
